The fourth article of faith is belief in the prophets and messengers of Allah. Out of His mercy, Allah chose special people to guide humankind, from the first, Ādam (as), to the last, Muhammad ﷺ. Muslims believe in all of them and love them.

Why this matters The prophets show us how to know and worship Allah, and how to live with honesty, kindness, and courage. Believing in them connects every Muslim to a long chain of guidance ending with the perfect example of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.

Many prophets, one message

Allah sent many prophets to different peoples and times. Although they lived in different places, they all called people to the same core message:

Prophets we know by name

The Qur'an names many prophets, and we honour them all, for example Ādam, Nūḥ, Ibrāhīm, Mūsā, and ʿĪsā (as). We speak of them and their followers with respect, because they were chosen and truthful servants of Allah.

Muhammad ﷺ, the final prophet

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ is the last of the prophets, called Khātam an-Nabiyyīn, the Seal of the Prophets (see Sūrah al-Aḥzāb, 33:40). No prophet will come after him. His message is complete and is for all people until the Last Day.

Following the prophets

We show belief in the prophets by loving them, learning their stories, and following their good example, especially the Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.

Common exam mistake: thinking “Seal of the Prophets” simply means Muhammad ﷺ was the greatest prophet. It specifically means no prophet will come after him — his message is final and complete.
Exam technique: quote the specific term Khātam an-Nabiyyīn (Sūrah al-Aḥzāb, 33:40) precisely when asked why Muhammad ﷺ is called the final prophet, rather than describing him only as “the most important”.

Put these prophets named in this chapter in chronological order, earliest first:

  1. Ādam (as)
  2. Nūḥ (as)
  3. Ibrāhīm (as)
  4. Mūsā (as)
  5. ʿĪsā (as)
  6. Muhammad ﷺ
