The fifth article of faith is belief in the Last Day. This life is a short but meaningful test, and one day it will end. Then Allah, who is perfectly just and endlessly merciful, will gather everyone and reward good. For those who believe and do good, there is the beautiful hope of Jannah (Paradise).

Why this matters Believing in the Last Day gives life purpose and hope. It reminds us that our good deeds truly matter and are never wasted, and that Allah's mercy is greater than we can imagine.

This life is a test

Allah created us to know and worship Him, and He tests us with the choices we make. Every kind word, honest act, and prayer counts. Nothing good we do is ever lost.

Accountability and Allah's justice

On the Last Day, people will be raised and their deeds will be shown. Allah judges with perfect fairness, so no one is treated unjustly, and even the smallest good deed is seen (see Sūrah az-Zalzalah, 99:7–8). His justice is always joined with His mercy.

The hope of Jannah

Jannah is a place of everlasting peace, joy, and beauty that Allah has prepared for those who believe and do good. It is a gift far greater than anything in this world, and the greatest joy of all is Allah's pleasure.

Allah's mercy is greater than any mistake, and He invites everyone to turn back to Him.

Living with hope

Justice and mercy — always together

The commonest error here is writing about the Last Day only as fear and punishment. A strong answer gives both sides equal weight.

Allah's perfect justiceAllah's vast mercy
Deeds are shown; no one is wronged in the slightestHe loves to forgive those who turn back to Him
Even the smallest good deed is seen (99:7–8)Jannah is a gift far greater than anything in this world
Every kind word and honest act countsHis mercy is greater than any mistake we make

Which side of the balance does each statement belong to?

  • No one is treated unfairly on that Day
  • Nothing good you did is ever lost
  • Everyone answers for their own deeds
  • He invites everyone to turn back to Him
  • Jannah is prepared for those who believe and do good
  • When we slip, we can say sorry and try again
Common exam mistake: describing belief in the Last Day only in terms of fear and punishment. The syllabus wants a balanced answer that gives equal weight to Allah's justice AND His vast mercy and the hope of Jannah.
Exam technique: answer Last Day questions with both dimensions together — quote 99:7–8 for accountability, then explicitly add the point about mercy and hope — since one-sided answers lose balance marks.
