Every Muslim carries a few simple, beautiful beliefs in their heart. In this lesson we meet them one by one — none are hard, and they are ideas you can hold onto for your whole life.

Why this matters: Knowing what we believe helps our hearts feel calm and sure. When we understand who Allah is and what He has told us, we feel safe, loved and never alone.

Who is Allah?

Allah is the name Muslims use for the One God, who made the sky, the sea, every animal, and you. Muslims describe Him using His own beautiful names:

Allah is the One — there is only Him, and nothing is like Him.
Allah is the Most Merciful — He is kinder to us than we can imagine.
Allah is the Creator — He made everything out of nothing.

We cannot see Allah, who is not a person or a shape, but we feel His kindness in the sunshine, our food, and the people who love us.

The Six Beliefs

Muslims hold six simple beliefs in their hearts. Here they are, one friendly sentence each:

BeliefWhat it means, simply
1. AllahWe believe in Allah, the One God, who made everything and loves us.
2. His angelsWe believe Allah made angels, gentle helpers we cannot see, who always obey Him.
3. His booksWe believe Allah sent books to guide people, and the last one is the Qur'an.
4. His messengersWe believe Allah chose special, kind people to teach others about Him, and the last was the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.
5. The Last DayWe believe that one day this world will end and Allah, who is fair and merciful, will bring everyone back to Him.

A calm thought

If you ever feel worried, remember belief six: Allah already knows everything, and He is the Most Merciful, always caring for you.
