The Origin of the Universe

🔬 Science Years 10–11 Higher

The Big Bang theory says the universe began about 13.8 billion years ago from a hot, dense state and has expanded ever since.

Where did everything come from? The leading scientific explanation is the Big Bang theory: about 13.8 billion years ago the entire universe began from an extremely hot, dense state and has been expanding and cooling ever since.

Why this matters The Big Bang is one of the biggest ideas in all of science, and it rests on real evidence you can understand. For a Muslim, learning how the universe began is also an invitation to reflect on the One who brought it into being.

What the Big Bang theory says

The Big Bang was not an explosion in space — it was the beginning of space itself. In the very first moments the universe was tiny, unimaginably hot and dense. As it expanded it cooled, allowing atoms, then stars and galaxies, to form over billions of years.

The evidence

Running the film backwards

If galaxies are all moving apart today, then long ago they must have been much closer together. Winding the expansion backwards points to a single beginning about 13.8 billion years ago — the origin of the universe.

🌙 In the Qur'an & Sunnah

Many Muslims reflect on verses that resonate with a universe beginning as one and then separating. The Qur'an asks:

"Have those who disbelieved not considered that the heavens and the earth were a joined entity, and We separated them…?" (Qur'an 21:30)
and describes an early stage of the heavens:
"Then He turned to the heaven while it was smoke…" (Qur'an 41:11)
Muslims read these as signs (āyāt) inviting reflection, described over 1,400 years ago, not as scientific proofs.

An honest note: the Qur'an is a book of guidance (hidāya), not a science textbook; its purpose is to turn hearts to the Creator. Muslims are encouraged to reflect on creation, while scholars remind us not to force fixed scientific claims onto the verses — science keeps developing, and the verses hold meanings beyond any single age. We admire the harmony with humility, and never claim more than we know.

What the theory says — and what it does not

Almost every misunderstanding of the Big Bang comes from the word “bang”.

The theory saysIt does not say
It was the beginning of space itselfThat it was an explosion in space
The universe began extremely hot and dense, about 13.8 billion years agoThat there was already an empty room for it to explode into
It has been expanding and cooling ever since, letting atoms, then stars and galaxies formThat everything appeared finished and complete at once

The evidence you can actually follow

ObservationWhat it tells us
Redshift — light from distant galaxies is stretched towards the red end of the spectrumThose galaxies are moving away from us, so the universe is expanding — and if it is expanding now, it was smaller and denser before

Which statements match the theory?

  • Space itself began at that moment
  • The universe has been cooling as it expands
  • Redshift shows galaxies moving apart
  • It was an explosion inside existing space
  • Stars and galaxies existed right from the first moment
