Right now, billions of tiny messages are racing around your body — telling your heart to beat, your eyes to read, and your hand to turn the page. All of this is managed by the brain and nervous system, the body's amazing control centre.

Why this matters Almost everything you feel and do begins in the nervous system. Understanding it helps explain reactions, emotions and even why a fright makes your heart race.

Neurons: the messengers

A neuron is a nerve cell that carries messages as tiny electrical signals. Neurons pass signals to each other across small gaps, letting information travel from your senses to your brain and back to your muscles — often in a fraction of a second.

The nervous system

The nervous system has two main parts:

Key brain regions

Different regions work together so you can, for example, read a word, understand it and turn the page smoothly.

🕌 The Muslim pioneers

Ibn Sīnā (Avicenna, 980–1037) pioneered psychophysiology — the link between mind and body. In a famous account, he diagnosed a young man's hidden heartsickness simply by feeling his pulse quicken whenever certain names were mentioned, showing that emotions produce real changes in the body. Ibn Sīnā also argued, in his "Floating Man" idea, that the self is aware of itself even without the senses — an early insight into consciousness.

The parts, and what each one does

PartIts job
NeuronA nerve cell that carries messages as tiny electrical signals, passing them to other neurons across small gaps
Central nervous systemThe brain and spinal cord — where signals are processed and decisions made
The route of a signalFrom the senses, to the brain, and back out to the muscles — often in a fraction of a second

That speed is why you pull your hand back before you have consciously decided to.

Match each term with its description:

Neuron
A nerve cell carrying messages as electrical signals
Central nervous system
The brain and the spinal cord together
The gap between neurons
The small space a signal must cross to pass on
