The Prophet Muhammad ص was born in Makkah in the year known as the Year of the Elephant, into the respected tribe of Quraysh.
Birth and early loss
He was born into the Banū Hāshim, a noble branch of the Quraysh. His father ʽAbdullāh passed away before he was born, so he was an orphan from the very start. His mother Āminah cared for him, but she too passed away when he was only about six years old, leaving him an orphan of both parents.
Raised with love
After his mother's death, he was cared for first by his grandfather ʽAbd al-Muṭṭalib, who loved him dearly. When his grandfather passed away, his uncle Abū Ṭālib took him into his home and protected him with great affection. As a young man, Muhammad ص worked as a shepherd and later travelled with the trade caravans, learning honesty and hard work.
Al-Amin — the trustworthy
The people of Makkah came to trust him completely. They gave him two well-known titles:
- Al-Amīn — the trustworthy
- Aṣ-Ṣādiq — the truthful
They would leave their valuables in his care, knowing he would never cheat them. He kept away from the idol-worship and bad habits of his people, and was known for settling disputes fairly, such as when the tribes argued over placing the Black Stone in the Ka'bah.
Marriage to Khadijah (ra)
His honesty in trade drew the attention of Khadījah (ra), a respected and wise businesswoman of Makkah. Impressed by his character, she proposed marriage, and he married her when he was about twenty-five. Khadījah (ra) became his beloved wife, his closest supporter and comfort, and later the first person to believe in his message. Their marriage was one of deep love, loyalty and mutual respect.
Put these events in the early life of the Prophet ﷺ in order, earliest first:

- His mother Āminah passes away when he is about six
- His grandfather ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib cares for him, then his uncle Abū Ṭālib
- He becomes known across Makkah as al-Amīn, the trustworthy
- He marries Khadījah (ra) at about twenty-five
