Ādam (as) was the very first human being and the very first prophet. Allah created him with His own care, breathed life into him, and honoured him above much of creation. From Ādam (as) all people are descended, which is why every human family is truly one family.

Why this matters Ādam's story shows us where we come from, why Allah honoured human beings, and what to do when we make mistakes. His sincere repentance is the model for every believer who wants to return to Allah.

Allah honoured Ādam (as)

Allah created Ādam (as) and taught him the names of all things:

"And He taught Ādam the names — all of them." (2:31)
This knowledge showed the special gift Allah gave human beings. Allah commanded the angels to bow to Ādam (as) in honour, and they obeyed. Only Iblīs (Satan) refused out of pride, and so he disobeyed Allah.

The test in the garden

Allah placed Ādam (as) and his wife Ḥawwā' in a beautiful garden and allowed them to enjoy it freely. He told them one thing only:

Satan whispered to them and tempted them until they ate from the tree, forgetting Allah's command. This was a slip, and they felt sorrow at once.

Sincere repentance (tawbah)

Ādam (as) did not despair or blame others. He turned back to Allah with humble words:

"Our Lord, we have wronged ourselves, and if You do not forgive us and have mercy upon us, we will surely be among the losers." (7:23)

Allah, the Most Merciful, accepted his repentance and guided him. This teaches us that everyone makes mistakes, but Allah loves those who turn back to Him with a sincere heart.

Lessons for us

Common exam mistake: suggesting that Ādam's (as) mistake makes every human being born sinful. Islam teaches that Ādam (as) repented sincerely and was fully forgiven, and that no human is born carrying anyone else's sin.
Exam technique: quote Ādam's (as) exact words of repentance (7:23) precisely when explaining tawbah — it models the two steps of admitting the wrong and asking for mercy, which is stronger than describing repentance only in general terms.

Put these events in the story of Ādam (as) in order:

  1. Allah creates Ādam (as) and teaches him the names of all things
  2. Allah commands the angels to bow to Ādam (as) in honour
  3. Ādam (as) and Ḥawwāʾ are tempted and eat from the forbidden tree
  4. Ādam (as) turns to Allah with sincere words of repentance
  5. Allah accepts his repentance and guides him
