A business is made of people, and people work best when they help each other. Even in a small shop, everyone has their own job to do — but the shop only really works well when the team pulls together.

Why this matters: Whatever job you do one day, you will almost certainly work as part of a team. Learning how good teams work together now will help you your whole life.

Everyone has a job to do

In a business, each person usually has their own role — but no single person's job happens in isolation. A shop assistant needs the shelves to be stocked; the person stocking shelves needs deliveries to arrive on time; the delivery driver needs someone to have ordered the goods in the first place. Everyone's work connects.

Working together: communication

Communication means sharing information clearly, so everyone knows what is happening and what they need to do. If a manager forgets to tell the team about a busy day coming up, the team might not be ready — good communication helps everyone plan and work smoothly together.

What makes a good leader?

A leader, such as a manager, helps guide the team. A good leader listens to their team, treats everyone fairly, explains things clearly, and helps out when things get difficult — rather than just giving orders and walking away.

Sort each behaviour into 'Good teamwork' or 'Not good teamwork':

  • Listening carefully to a teammate's idea
  • Telling a colleague clearly what needs doing
  • Helping a teammate who is struggling
  • Ignoring what a teammate says
  • Keeping important information secret from the team
  • Refusing to help when someone is struggling
You don't have to be the manager to be a good team member. Listening, being kind, and communicating clearly are things anyone in a team can do, at any age.

Everyone depends on somebody

Each person has their own job, but no job happens on its own. Follow the chain.

PersonTheir jobThey depend on...
Delivery driverBrings the stock to the shopThe order being packed and ready on time
Shelf stockerFills the shelvesThe delivery arriving on time
Shop assistantHelps customers and sellsThe shelves being stocked

Break one link and the whole chain feels it — which is why a team that helps each other works better than a group of people working alone.

Match each person with what they need from someone else:

The shop assistant
Needs the shelves to be stocked
The person stocking shelves
Needs the delivery to arrive on time
The delivery driver
Needs the order packed and ready
